The Fated Escape

Overview

A riveting and romantic adventure during the Golden Age of Piracy when mysteriously, a girl with no memory, awakens on a pirate ship called The Fated Escape. The brutal pirates treat her well, but the captain takes her breath away. Ransomed and delivered to relatives in Ipswich, she learns her name is Sary but is thrust into the grips of witch-mania. She strives to smuggle accused witches to safety but as the witch trials die down, her unwanted marriage is interrupted by Swift Runner, a Wampanoag warrior. His kindness leads to their marriage and a daughter, named Fawn. When sickness wipes out the community, it leaves only Sary and Fawn alive. The two head to Boston to claim inheritances, then sail for the East Indies in search of her missionary parents. Madagascar pirates capture them to reunite her with Captain Nate. They marry and seek out his mother on the Cocos Islands. A second child, Nathaniel, is born, amid battling cutthroat pirates and a hurricane. At Seram Island in the Coral Triangle, they retrieve her parents and narrowly escape an erupting volcano. At Timor Island, Sary is captured and enslaved in a gold mine, then as a beeswax worker. Pregnant, she escapes the atrocities and gives birth to another son, Thomas, in a rickety sloop. On return travels, lightning topples their mast, and they rescue ill slaves. Back in Boston, crew members narrowly avoid hanging but are marooned and rescued instead. Nate retires from piracy, and the ship heads for Canada. They winter at Isle Royale and navigate the St. Lawrence River to Montreal, to farm. The crew continues its pirate rounds in summer and foils an Iroquois attack. After a devastating fire, a new community and tannery is established at Muskoka. Befriending the Anishinaabe leaves them caught in the throes of inter-tribal warfare. This sweeping historical drama is filled with love, perseverance, and courage against relentless odds.
