After an apprenticeship as a carpenter, he attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ School of Architecture, Design and Conservation from 1971 to 1977, specialising in the restoration and history of ships. He has held responsibility for the Danish National Museum’s collection of restored vessels. From 1984 to 2003, he worked as a curator at the Institute of Maritime Archaeology of the Danish National Museum, and from 2004 and until he retired in 2013 as a curator at the Viking Ship Museum.
