OverviewThis is a valuable collection that uncovers the fervor and tenacity of a man who gave his all to take the Gospel to Cuba. One good day in 1940 he set foot for the first time on the island of Cuba, the land he loved and respected until his last days. Naturally, he did not arrive in Cuba by chance. The combined events of his life brought him to this task. He had been commissioned by the recently formed Board of Foreign Missions of the Free Will Baptists of the United States of America. He had met earlier with Free Will Baptist leaders and felt a special chemistry between him and this group of men. Their desire was that the Gospel message be heard not only on the continent of North America but in other latitudes of the world. The Willeys were a remarkable team-Thomas with his zeal and pioneering spirit for opening up new frontiers, and Mabel, his wife, with her organizational, teaching skills and refinement, were God's perfect team to establish the institution. Rafael Josu was the third member of this special team, known for his administrative and teaching gifts. He guided the Willeys with an understanding of his own people and later kept the work together during the hard years of the Revolution when missionaries were unable to return. On January 1, 1948, the first issue of El Mensajero Fiel (The Faithful Messenger) was distributed to the Free Will Baptist churches of Cuba. This was God's instrument to nurture new believers and unify the churches through difficult times until the last issue in January-February 1965. It is from these pages that most of this work was taken. While many others contributed to each issue of the magazine, from 1948 through 1961 this was one of the principal channels through which Thomas Willey shared his heart and passion with the people he loved. The magazine served a wide audience for 17 years in Cuba, the U.S., Central and South America.
