Overview

The importance of faith in Christianity cannot be denied, nor the arguments surrounding it. The crisis of faith that now grips the Western church necessitates a fresh look at its essential teachings. This study traces the trajectory of St. Paul's concept of faith in the rest of the New Testament in order to answer the question of how far and in what manner the other books of the New Testament agree or disagree with the Apostle of the Gentiles. Was St. Paul an outlier or an influencer? Common assumptions about faith and the language of faith are challenged in this study. Rather than giving simple voice to conventional presuppositions, this book wrestles with the origin and character of Christian faith and provides a provocative view that should spark renewed discussion about the heart of Christianity.

Reviews

The Faith of the New Testament is a must-read for any student serious about grasping not only the foundation of the Christian witness, centered in Jesus Christ, but also the origin of faith itself. With clarity and simplicity, Harrisville offers a comprehensive study of the New Testament texts, making connections and comparisons with the apostle Paul's understanding of faith. I highly recommend this work for anyone interested in deepening their biblical knowledge and strengthening their faith walk with Christ. --Daniel W. Selbo, bishop, North American Lutheran Church The apostle Paul tells us that the gospel is the power of God for salvation. In this book, Harrisville guides us into New Testament approaches to faith, especially Paul's, in order to tap into and unleash God's creative energy that inspires faith and allows the church to be energized by it. Harrisville offers a resource valuable for every gospel preacher. --Mark Mattes, Grand View University Countering volitional interpretations, Harrisville shows how a Pauline trajectory of faith as a transformative gift of divine power can be traced throughout the New Testament. I highly recommend this book. It succeeds in recovering the vital faith of the early Christians whose lives were changed in response to the call of God through the gospel of Jesus Christ. --Charles B. Puskas, North Central University Faith is a fundamental category of Scripture. It means trust, assent to revealed truth, conviction that forms character, and especially in the theology of Paul, gracious gift. Using Paul's theology of grace as his measure, Harrisville examines faith in a wide-ranging, rich word study of the New Testament canon. --Walter Sundberg, Luther Seminary, emeritus The dynamics of Christian faith vary, but is there a consistent and coherent way of thinking of its origins and consequences? Harrisville leads us through the New Testament books looking for answers. He finds unity and diversity of expression, but common themes at a deeper level. The result is a fine contribution for theology and ministry. --Arland J. Hultgren, Luther Seminary, emeritus
