The Extra Ordinary Women of Britain

Overview

Britain has a hidden wealth of fascinating and important women peppered throughout its history, perhaps more than any other European nation. This book is an introduction to thirty-seven British women whom I believe are truly exceptional and, since the 1st century AD, their lives have dramatically influenced British history and culture. You will know some of them, but you may not know others. This is an introduction to them and it also includes a list of other women that you will find worthy of your own research. Please note, however, that each of these chapters is an introduction and you may wish to read more about them yourselves. This book is a sequel to my book The Extra Ordinary Women of France. Both books were inspired by a visit I took some years ago to the Panthéon in Paris, the mausoleum for the interment of famous men and women of France. There were 81 people interred there of which only 6 were women. Hence, the idea for both these books. I know you will find them fascinating. They should be available from booksellers and from Amazon.

Author Information

Peter, the only child of John and Margaret Hunt, was born in Brighton on 5th July, 1940 but, at the age of five, began his formative childhood in post-war Hong Kong. At the age of seven, he was sent back to England to complete his education as a boarder first at Worth Preparatory school and, from age thirteen, at Downside Public School. He completed that phase of his education at Trinity College, Dublin, where he studied English and Italian. He moved to London where he began his career in advertising and marketing taking a sabbatical to graduate from Cranfield's School of Management. From there, he worked for Jimmy Goldsmith marketing confectionery before moving on to work for the Jamaican Government marketing Jamaican products in Europe and, finally, with his stepson setting up a number of retail American sports shops, called Slick Willies, and an import company, called American Actionwear. Eventually, he inherited his parents' home in Jersey and moved there some forty years ago with his wife who, tragically, died of cancer aged 50. Later, he met Jennifer who has now been his partner for over 25 years. In Jersey, he wrote articles for the local newspaper, the Jersey Evening Post and five books about Jersey. He has recently completed three books about his eventful and unusual life entitled Child of a bygone era, The Growing pains of a colonial boy and the Autumn years of a colonial boy. Finally, he has written a prequel to this history entitled The Extra Ordinary Women of France. They are available from Amazon and various book sellers.
