Author Information

Lewis Richard Farnell FBA was an Oxford professor who studied ancient literature and was Vice-Chancellor from 1920 to 1923. He was born in 1856 and died in 1934. Lewis Farnell was born in 1856 in Salisbury, which is in the south of England. He went to school at the City of London School and Exeter College, Oxford. In 1878, he got a first class degree in Literae Humaniores from Exeter College. It was 1880 when he was made a Fellow of Exeter College and 1883 when he was made a lecturer in classics. His next job was as Rector, or head, of the College. Farnell took a number of trips around Europe between 1880 and 1893. He studied ancient archaeology in Berlin and Munich and also visited Asia Minor and Greece. He was an associated member of the German Archaeological Institute starting in 1901. In June of that year, he got his D.Litt. from the University of Oxford. Farnell became a Fellow of the British Academy in 1916. Besides that, the universities of Dublin (Ireland), St. Andrews (Scotland), and Geneva (Switzerland) gave him honors degrees.
