We wrote the Essence of Systems Engineering explicitly for NAWCWD, the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division. However, we also wrote the book to be applicable throughout the Department of Defense and its suppliers. Be aware this book is not a how-to guide. We have read many books in our careers that were tomes on systems engineering with hundreds of pages of technical details. In this book, we only talk about the implications of technology. Rick Kelly has pursued system engineering excellence over his forty-year career working for DOD and as an Aerospace Consultant. Rick's career has been focused on the art and science of weaponeering for the Department of the Navy to deliver game-changing Weapons Systems for the Fleet. Rick currently holds dual positions as the NAVAIR Technical Warrant Holder for Weapons and Targets and executes the duties of Chief Engineer for the NAWCWD Weapons and Energetics Department.
