The Prince of Wales, however, his old pupil, was much attached to him, and always spoke highly of him,3 and Bishop Newton says of him that he was a generous-minded man with a noble way of thinking.4 Considering that Richard Terrick, who had previously been Bishop of Peterborough (1757-64), held for thirteen years (1764-77) the important see of London, less is heard of him than might have been expected. LOWTH 211 to have been listened to with much attention.1 But he was accused by some of being supple and artful,2 and nothing that is told of him gives the idea of anything like power. Little can be said of a bishop who, so far as it appears, fulfilled the duties of his office with decent respectability, according to the standard of his age, but came in no way prominently forward as a leader of opinion or of action. Few names of English bishops in the eighteenth century are so well remembered as that of Robert Lowth (St. David's 1766, Oxford 1766-77, London 1777-87). The pure and elegant Latin of his 'Praelectiones' permanently secured his fame as a scholar; his learning as a Hebraist is still more firmly established by his valuable works on the sacred poets of the Hebrews.
