It is also, which does not always follow, an enlightening book and a practical one. Part of its charm comes from the exquisite photographs which beautify every page. The photographer, John Crook, who is credited as equal author, has been careful to use only natural light, so what we see on these pages is what we shall see when we visit, and this book makes one very eager to do exactly that and experience for ourselves the rich heritage of England. The text could not be bettered. It is succinct, informative and intelligent. Tatton-Brown praises with a judicious eye; Manchester Cathedral, for example, has 'exceptional woodwork', but he adds a wish that the interior of the building were not quite so dark. Each of the 63 cathedrals is summarised under the headings Dedication, History and Of Special Interest. (The last two headings slide into each other: that Jane Austen is buried at Winchester Cathedral comes under History but would equally be a point of Special Interest.) As somebody who lives in Norfolk, I looked at once for 'my' cathedrals, the great Romanesque building of the Middle Ages, rightly acclaimed here and splendidly described in four pages - no cathedral gets more than five - and the 19th-century building, 'the finest Victorian Roman Catholic Cathedral', which receives one page but that is sensitive and balanced. The beauty of this book's photography is matched by the intelligence of the text and the detached yet reverent tone. The introduction speaks of the spiritual meaning of cathedrals and, with the utmost elegance and absence of obtrusive piety, all in this book bears that statement out. Review by Sister Wendy Beckett (Kirkus UK) Author InformationTim Tatton Brown has been an archaeologist for more than 30 years, during which time he has gained an intimate knowledge of numerous English cathedrals. He has acted as a consultant to Canterbury, Chichester, Rochester and Salisbury cathedrals - as well as to the two 'royal peculiars' of Westminster Abbey and St George's Chapel, Windsor - and is also the author of Great cathedrals of' Britain (BBC). John Crook, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and an honorary research fellow of Reading University, is an independent architectural historian and a professional architectural and topographical photographer. Recent commissions include architectural photography in Jerusalem and a major new illustrated history of Winchester Cathedral. Tab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
