OverviewThis book contributes to comparative global studies on agricultural origins and the evolution of sedentary societies, while providing a detailed treatment of the evidence from south India. It provides a comprehensive assessment of issues and evidence relating the origins of agriculture, and sedentary village communities in south India, and includes a current assessment of early Indian agriculture in the context of theories of agricultural origins in other world regions. Evidence from south Indian archaeobotany is explored, incorporating all of the recently published data of the authors, as well as new data. This is then integrated with archaeological and historical linguistic evidence to provide a cultural history of south India, from the beginnings of simple cultivation to more intensive agriculture and craft production associated with the emergence of social hierarchy.
