Overview

The Dynamics of Water Innovation supports water researchers in understanding the timelines that can be expected when investing in, developing and introducing new water and wastewater treatment technologies and processes. The book provides a basis for planning and decision-making through a new model for water innovation adoption, along with historical evidence and examples. Case studies provide background on how each was commercialized and to show what innovation looks like. Other sections focus on the development of criteria that can be used to study industry adoption and dissemination of water technologies through various stages. Final sections propose a novel framework to measure market impact and technology diffusion, a total of 11 technologies have been applied to this framework in this chapter to show its applicability and the value provided.

Author Information

"After being awarded a bio-chemistry degree, Paul’s first role was for the Body Shop working alongside the pioneering environmentalist Anita Roddick. Paul then volunteered for the World Wildlife Fund in Malaysia, and after completing a Master’s degree he later returned to research the effects that deforestation was having on water quality. Paul’s next role was with Atkins, one of the globally leading engineering management consultancies who are pioneering in their approaches to projects. Whilst working as an engineering consultant, he observed the prolonged length of time it took to bring water technologies to the marketplace, so he founded BlueTech Research in 2011 to support innovation. Paul’s latest project “Brave Blue World” is designed to increase awareness of existing solutions to the water crisis, he co-produced the documentary that has attracted support from a host of A-list celebrities. Paul regularly lectures and has recently spoken at Davos 2020, Web Summit 2020 and at Harvard and Cambridge Universities. Paul now advises many global Fortune 500 corporates including L’Oréal, Microsoft and PepsiCo on their water strategy policies. Dr. Lakshmi Adapa is working as a Water Technology Market Analyst at BlueTech Research and is based in Netherlands. She holds a PhD Degree in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford, where her research focused on the industrial wastewater treatment and the recovery of heavy metals using biofilms. Professor dr.ir. Cees J.N. Buisman holds a MsC and PhD degree from Wageningen University & Research. Since 2003, he is Professor at the sub department of Environmental Technology at Wageningen University in the field of biological reuse and recovery technology. The current focal point is on bio-electrochemistry, alternative fermentation and biological induced solid production, both for recovery of energy, chemicals and minerals. He combines his position of Professor with his position as Executive Board Member at Wetsus, ""European centre of excellence for sustainable water technology"". The objective of Wetsus is to create a business-driven international multidisciplinary research program."
