OverviewThis is the first detailed analysis of the RAFs role over Dunkirk in 1940. In the 9 days surrounding the evacuation (Operation Dynamo) it is often said that the RAF did not do enough to help protect the troops on the beaches and the fleet of vessels trying to evacuate them. Dave Sloggett challenges that viewpoint with a book that will be published in 2015 on the 75th anniversary of the operation using detailed records drawn from the period. It provides a unique and definitive view of the controversy surrounding this topic. The Dunkirk Myth sets the scene before the Dunkirk operation looking at how Fighter Command resources where being thrown into the Battle for France. Dave Sloggett explains why the myth that the RAF did not help the troops is wrong using a detailed analysis of the situation (based on operational analysis of the ORBAT of the engaged forces). Dave Sloggett addresses what the Dunkirk campaign cost the RAF in terms of men and machines and how that affected the RAF at the start of the Battle of Britain. He evaluates if the decision to deploy the RAF over the beaches at Dunkirk was wrong. Fundamentally if the Germans had just made a very slightly different choices in the way they conducted the Battle of Britain its clear we would have lost.
