Overview

"1954 South Carolina. Deep South. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that segregation in schools is unconstitutional. Despite the ruling, racism, discrimination and school segregation remain the norm. At a remote rural middle school, a violent, racist school bully, whose father is in the KKK, has vowed to kill any 'nigger' who sets foot on the school grounds. He hates the Brooklyn Dodgers for being the first major league baseball team to break the color barrier with a black player: Jackie Robinson. He gives Elton Hayes, an eleven-year-old white boy, one weekend to name his favorite baseball team - any team but the Brooklyn Dodgers. Elton Hayes hates being told what to do. Growing up poor, he has no time for sports, but loves horror movies. His favorite movie: ""The Wolf Man"", starring Lon Chaney Jr. as Larry Talbot. Elton's best friend tells him everything in life is predestined: ""What will be, will be."" Elton knows Larry Talbot's destiny: changing to a werewolf every full moon and tearing someone's throat out. He wonders what his destiny will be when he faces the bully Monday morning: the courage to stand up for Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers against racism, or the cowardice of a ""Wolf Man"": Naming another team to avoid the worst ""lickin"" of his life, while remaining silent about the racism around him."
