OverviewIt is astonishing that the Becks, who came from very humble beginnings, were able to overcome adversity and rise to become outstanding surgeons and physicians. They visited and adopted the idea of cooperative medicine from the Mayo Clinic. Their North Chicago Hospital was established with this principle. It was the first hospital to do so in Chicago. They practiced scientific medicine and used new treatments and techniques in their practice. Carl was a professor in surgical pathology at the University of Illinois for many years. Both Emil and Joseph went to Europe as postgraduates also trained in pathology. Emil was one of the first surgeons in Chicago to use radium for the treatment of cancer. Joseph was influential in bringing about the discipline of pathology into the training program of ear, nose, and throat surgeons in the United States. Education of medical students and practicing physicians was another one of Beck priorities. They were men of integrity with great ideals who strove for excellence. They and members of their families have made substantial contribution to science, the arts, education, and business in America. They are role models for all.
