The Divine Monarchy of the North: James Jesse Strang and America's Only Kingdom

Overview

The Divine Monarchy of the North: James Jesse Strang and America's Only Kingdom The Divine Monarchy of the North tells the extraordinary true story of James Jesse Strang, the only crowned king in American history. In 1850, this charismatic lawyer and self-proclaimed prophet established a literal kingdom on Beaver Island in Lake Michigan, ruling over 2,600 followers who practiced polygamy, observed the Saturday Sabbath, and performed animal sacrifices as part of their attempt to restore biblical religion. Strang was no simple charlatan-he served competently in the Michigan legislature, published scientific work in the Smithsonian Institution, and built a thriving economy that competed with established Great Lakes trading centers. His remarkable success made him dangerous enemies both within and outside his kingdom. After introducing controversial dress reforms and flogging two dissidents, Strang was assassinated in 1856 by men who received sanctuary aboard a federal warship. Within weeks, a mob expelled the entire Mormon population from the island in what one historian called ""the most disgraceful day in Michigan history."" Drawing on extensive primary sources, this book examines the intersection of religious freedom, alternative sovereignty, and the limits of tolerance in nineteenth-century America, revealing a forgotten chapter of American history that raises profound questions about the boundaries of acceptable difference in democratic society.
