Overview

The diocese of Elphin covers most of County Roscommon, the east of County Sligo, a small part of north-east Galway and a small part of County Westmeath. It includes 37 parishes. This book provides a short history of each parish in the diocese, each with its own map, list of townlands and illustrations. Historians should find a treasure trove of source material for further study: an extensive bibliography of the diocese, short biographies of the bishops of the diocese over the centuries, bishops' reports to Rome from the 17th to the 18th centuries, clergy lists from the 18th to the 20th centuries, notes on the religious orders in the diocese and on the patron saints of the various parishes. It also contains the text of the 1731 ""Report on the State of Popery in Ireland"".
