Diazepam is utilized to manage episodes of heightened seizures, such as cluster or breakthrough seizures, in individuals who are already on medication for seizure control. This medication is intended solely for short-term use during seizure episodes and is not meant for daily prevention of seizures. Uncontrolled seizures can escalate into severe and potentially life-threatening seizures that do not cease (status epilepticus). The use of diazepam is not advised for children under 6 months of age due to the potential for serious side effects. Diazepam operates by soothing the brain and nervous system. It is classified as a benzodiazepine. Diazepam is marketed under several brand names, including Valium, Diastat, and Diastat AcuDial.
