Zheng received a Bachelor's degree from Sun Yat-sen University in 1982 and a doctorate in History from Jinan University in 1987. Since 1988, he has held various teaching and research positions at Tokyo University, Kyoto University, Toyo Bunko, The University of Sydney, The University of British Columbia, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, specializing in the history of Sino-Japanese relations and modern Chinese history. He has collected a large volume of literature relating to the Diaoyu Islands, published a number of books and presented over a hundred papers in North America and the greater China area.
