OverviewMoments in instrumental teaching from the turn of the 20th century are presented. In particular, the course shows how the musical understanding of society and the resulting institution of music schools developed from the first groups of the youth movement. The focus is primarily on the different histories, traditions and values of the recorder and the transverse flute. It is shown that their different traditions depend, on the one hand, on the constant pursuit of greater sound volume and the resulting structural modifications to the instruments and, on the other hand, on the understanding of music and appreciation of instruments in society at the time. Based on these aspects, the components of a concept for an instrumental school for recorders and transverse flutes are discussed. The individual learning areas and their significance in instrumental teaching and in instrumental schools are highlighted, as are the various elements involved in setting up a recorder and transverse flute school. With this background knowledge, six selected schools are analysed and compared with each other.
