OverviewA spring evening in central London, 1967. There is a hint of summer warmth in the air and fresh green leaves are emerging over the cracked, peeling bark of the plane trees. The last of the commuters rush home, but our steps lead us a few blocks past Trafalgar Square onto a narrow street full of antique and Asian shops: Monmouth Street. At the very end of the street on the left is a small shop called Sakura - Japanese for cherry blossom . Amazingly, the store is still open. Inside are exotic items for sale, a few books and incense sticks. In the back corner of the shop, hidden behind a curtain, a staircase leads down. On at its end there are two small rooms. The room on the right is slightly larger, but measures no more than 16 square meters. After your eyes adjust to the light, you can make out about a dozen people filling the small space. Most sit on chairs, some on cushions on the floor. On the back wall is a lacquered shrine in the middle, with burning candles, a flower vase and a small Buddha figure.
