OverviewIn this third volume of The Triple Knowledge series, Herman Hoeksema continues to follow the Heidelberg Catechism's treatment of the Apostles' Creed. He explains the doctrine of the second person of the Trinity as he is revealed in Jesus Christ. Usually the doctrine of Christ is distinguished according to his names, natures, offices, and states. In harmony with the Apostles' Creed and the Catechism, the author explains the meaning of the name Jesus, that is, savior. He goes on to treat the name Christ. In delineating the meaning of this name, he treats the threefold office of prophet, priest, and king both as Christ holds this office and as we hold it. In this connection he furnishes a detailed explanation of the priesthood of Melchisedec, a truth that is important but little understood. In explanation of Lord's Day 13, Hoeksema explains Christ's sonship and ours, in which he describes the truth of our adoption to sons, a source of comfort to the Christian. Beginning with his exposition of Lord's Day 14, Hoeksema begins a discussion of Christ's state of humiliation, explaining the unfathomable truth of the incarnation. He goes on to explain the meaning of the atonement and to refute false conceptions of it. He concludes this volume with a comforting discussion of the significance of the death of believers.
