Shaykh Mawlay al-'Arabi ad-Darqawi (1159AH/1745CE - 1239AH/1825CE)Mawlay al-'Arabi ad-Darqawi revitalised the Shadhili tariqa and spread tasawwuf in North Africa. He trained and authorised thousands of others who were qualified to take seekers by the hand, by the permission of Allah, glorious is He. Among the most influential of his later followers are Shaykh Ahmad ibn Mustafa al-'Alawi of Mustaghanem, Algeria, Shaykh Muhammad ibn al-Habib of Meknes, Morocco and Shaykh Dr. Abdalqadir as-Sufi. The tariqa spread by means of them and others to Syria, Jordan, Palestine, the US, Canada, Europe, Malaysia, Indonesia. Shaykh Nuh Ha Mim Keller, Shaykh Muhammad al-Ya'qubi are other highly influential shaykhs of the Darqawi tariqa. Aisha Bewley is the translator of a large number of classical works of Islam and Sufism, often in collaboration with Abdalhaqq Bewley, notably The Noble Qur'an - a New Rendering of Its Meanings in English; Muhammad, Messenger of Allah - the translation of Qāḍī 'Iyāḍ's ash-Shifā'; the Muwaṭṭa' of Imam Mālik ibn Anas; and Imam an-Nawawī's Riyāḍ aṣ-Ṣāliḥīn. She is the author of a number of books including Democratic Tyranny and the Islamic Paradigm and Islam the Empowering of Women.
