OverviewThere are those that argue that the only constants in life are death and taxes. Sure, there is an annual notice of money we owe to someone else and far too often we are reminded that our days are not infinite. But I would argue that in the 21st century, food and cyber are also unavoidable and perhaps more present constants in our lives. Food is prolific in everything we do; from socializing (cooking for family or friends), to marking certain occasions (grabbing a work-break snack or dinning out after a promotion), to community service (organizing a potluck charity event). Similarly, cyber is in our home (connections to the internet), in our work life (virtual meetings and data transfers), and even in our leisure activities (video games in the multiverse or booking a holiday online in an off-the-grid cabin in the mountains). And yet, while food and cyber are critical for our daily function and interaction with other people, their omnipresence, the volume of information about these topics, and how quickly information about the topics changes can be intimidating.
