Reviews

' ... Taylor's introduction is informative and lucid. It situates Miller in his social, political and theological milieux (which were anything but distinct), explains the intricacies of the conflicts of his day and age and his part(s) therein, and discusses his geological contributions and ideas. The book is furnished with maps, and no good library should be without it.' Metascience; 'Hugh Miller (1802-56) was a fascinating Victorian. ... The excellent, well-referenced introduction by Michael Taylor, an eminent Scottish geologist, well informed on Hugh Miller's life and times, adds much value to this still very readable book. ... ' Archives of Natural History; 'His [Miller's] writing was intended to bring Geology, and Science in general, before a wider audience. In that sense he was one of the earliest of popular science writers. ... ' Scottish Journal of Geology
