The cross and medal of St. Benedict is also among the gifts bestowed by the Benedictine Order. For centuries, it has been a conduit for God's power against malicious spirits. The history of this cross and medal--how it first came about, how it was used, and miracles attributed to its use--was not easily apparent, nor readily accessible. Author Information

St Gregory the Great (540-604) was pope between 590 and 604 AD. St. Gregory lived a humble life even as pope, dining with the poor at almost every meal, constantly giving alms and land away, and sending his priests into the streets to minister to the poor. During his pontificate, he made several changes to the Mass, some of which still exist today. However, he is most famous for Gregorian Chant. As a prolific writer, he is best known for his biography, The Life of St. Benedict.
