Overview

Outraged by the abuses of human life committed by the King of Belgium, Leopold II, Arthur Doyle began to document the events in the Congo. The Congo Free State was a former state in central Africa covering much of the territory that comprises of the modern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was created in the 1880s through agreements with European investors headed by Leopold II, King of the Belgians. Unlike other colonies, the Congo Free State was owned as the private property of this one man, and through this power, he stripped a country of its humanity by crimes only remotely rivalled by Hitler during the Holocaust.
