Overview

This dictionary contains quotations in Latin, French, German, Italian and Spanish. The entries were chosen by five editors, each widely read in the language concerned. The majority of the entries will probably be familiar to an English reader, and a few were chosen because, although unfamiliar, the editorial team thought them delightful. The sayings are accompanied by their translation into English and cross-indexed for easy reference. The range includes literary quotations, political quotations, poetic thoughts, pungent comments, polished epigrams and shrewd perceptions, by everyone from Cicero to Sartre, Goethe to Goering.

Reviews

What a great idea! A dictionary of more than 3000 quotations in French, German, Spanish, Italian and of course Latin, each accompanied by its source and an English translation. The structure allows both quick consultation and leisurely browsing: the book is divided into sections by language, each with its own index, with at the back, a complete index in English of all the quotations included and an index of authors. The book is aimed at non-specialists and includes quotes that an English reader may come across, for example, in the media, and not understand, providing elucidation and facilitating, in the words of Horace, mentis gratissimus error (a most delightful wandering of the mind).
