Before joining the Pittsburgh department in 2001, Gupta taught at Indiana University, University of Illinois at Chicago, and McGill University. Gupta has received fellowships from the NEH and the ACLS, and he was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford.
