Overview

This research aims to study the concept of life and death in Theravada Buddhism and it is intended to study in these three objectives, (1) to study about life in Theravada Buddhism, (2) to study about death in Theravada Buddhism and (3) to criticize both life and death. The researcher has studied, searched and collected all materials from Buddhist scriptures (Tipitaka) which considered to be primary data and its commentaries (Atthagatha) including other books which are written by acceptable people in Buddhist societies. Having studied, the researcher found that: Buddhism pays attention to life especially, human being's life in case of it can be developed to the high level of morality. Buddhism talks about life in many aspects. These are the type of life, the arising of life, the elements of life, the characteristic of life the destination of life the practical way of life, life after death and the supreme life. According to Buddhism, death is the common phenomenal of life or can be said having rebirth will have death as its shadow. Buddhism describes the death in many kinds but in conclusion, it can be summarized to be two kinds that are (1) one dies at the end of one's own age which is called Kala-Marana and (2) one dies while one's own age is going on which is called Akala-Marana. Moreover, one can take the benefit of death in order to develop oneself by practicing the mindfulness of death (Maranasati). Having studied, Buddhism talks about death in more details and offers the way of practicing on death until it can be applied to daily life.
