Community of Religions: Voices and Images of the Parliament of the World's Religions

Overview

Gathered on the centenary and in the same city of Chicago where the first Parliament took place, the 1993 Parliament of the World's Religions was the largest interfaith gathering ever held. Representatives from minority, ethnic, and tribal religions took the podium as equals alongside representatives from the world's largest religious traditions. The Community of Religions is an essential record of this historic event, containing major addresses and reflections as well as numerous short evocations of the spirit of the Parliament.

Reviews

Edited by Teasdale, a Catholic religious brother and trustee of the Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions (CPWR), and Cairns (applied theology and spirituality, Chicago Theological Seminary), this work is an eminently useful collection of essays by participants at the 1993 Parliament of the World's Religions, held in Chicago from August 28 to September 5, 1993. The purpose of the second parliament was not only to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first (also held in Chicago) but also to take current stock of the state of religion in contemporary secularized society and to present a new vision of religion's role in the third millennium. This collection of essays offers representative impressions, ideas, images, and proposed courses of action from contributors of diverse religious backgrounds (e.g. the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Francesco Gioria) who participated in the parliament's sessions. Library Journal In 1993, representatives from the multitude of the world's great religious traditions met in Chicago to celebrate the centennial of the 1893 World Parliament of Religions. The speeches, poems and essays collected in this volume reflect the sense of harmony and community that emerged from the discussions among adherents of widely diverse religions. Included in the collection are the voices of religious leaders like the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Francesco Gioia, and of scholars like Paul Knitter and Byron Sherwin, discussing topics ranging from spiritual pluralism and religious ritual to global ethics and the future of religions. A helpful opening section provides a comparative historical overview of the 1893 and 1993 Parliaments while an extensive appendix offers a variety of resources available for exploring the impact of the two Parliaments upon the world's religious communities. By capturing the spirit of understanding and acceptance that marked the 1993 Parliament, this collection challenges and inspires the world's religions to move beyond narrow sectarianism to a wide religious pluralism as they seek to provide spiritual values to a culture increasingly enamored of material values.
