Overview

During the 1990s, there were two major developments within the Common EU Martitime Transport Policy (CMTP) - the establishment of European Union policies on safe seas and on short-shipping. While analyzing and appraising these and other developments to the CMTP in this period, this text is in essence a study of Europeanization. It focuses on both the academic environment of maritime transport and the interaction of policy-makers and organized interests during the policy-making process, with an emphasis on the political dimensions. Reflecting on the debate on European integration, the book concludes that an internal EU policy arena with its own characteristics and complexity has grown considerably. Within this arena, the development of the Common Maritime Transport Policy turns a core part of European intergration.

Reviews

'Pallis's book is a very comprehensive account and stimulating analysis of the subject, in which the author builds up a clear chain of evidence for the reader to trace. There is also a very accessible account of ideas in European integration for the non subject specialist.' Justin Greenwood, Robert Gordon University, UK 'Sectoral studies of policy development have in recent years proved very illuminating and informative about decision-making int he European Union. This study of maritime transport policy in the 1990s is among the best...The result is full of implications for European integration theory...' Alan Butt Philip, University of Bath, UK 'The book will be of primary value to those with an interest in EU maritime policy, but will also help those researching policy making in the EU.' European Access 'This publication is very welcome!...the purpose of the book is to generate knowledge on the progress and course of the CMPT in the 1990s and this aim is well achieved.' Logistics & Transport Focus 'This book offers a detailed and satisfying discussion for those interested in understanding European policies in maritime safety and short-sea shipping.' European Urban and Regional Studies 'This study of maritime transport policy in the 1990's is among the best. It chronicles meticulously the stages by which the European Community (later the EU) has moved into the maritime transport policy field and has persuaded the key political actors of the merits of expanding the European policy dimension.'
