The Colonel's Way, The Secret Diaries of a POW, The Philippines 1941-1945

Overview

The unabridged original diaries of Colonel Arthur Lee Shreve, Jr. - a first-hand memoire of the Fall of Bataan and WWII history and the unparalleled survival story that followed; a colonel who went all-in for his fellow American GIs for four years as a POW of the Japanese-- a compassionate leader who believed that a rising tide lifts all ships. When COL Arthur Lee Shreve, Jr. (U.S. Army pilot, WWI) becomes a POW of the Japanese, his life turns into an unforgettable tale of grit, American ingenuity, and raw bravery. After the fall of the Philippines, he survives the Bataan Death March, cares for his men, and leverages a secret intelligence operation for humanitarian purposes. Working with the Filipino Resistance, he smuggles in his own checkbook to buy food for his men-unthinkable acts of courage under the direst circumstances, risking execution, saving lives, and forging a legacy of leadership and purpose that defines a true hero: The Colonel's Way.

Reviews

'The Colonel's Way is a tribute to the remarkable life of Colonel Arthur L. Shreve, Jr. who survived against unbelievable odds, never breaking faith with his family, his country or his God. Fully aware that discovery of his documents would mean certain death, Shreve compiled a record of Japan's treatment of the Americans which became indisputable evidence in the ensuing Pacific war crimes trials. The Colonel's Way will reignite your sense of patriotism and faith, proving without a doubt that Americans can endure any hardship.' George A. Crawford, Lt. Col., USAF (ret)Author: Manhunting: Reversing the Polarity of Warfare 'I finished The Colonel's Way two days after receipt. A compelling narrative with as much story between the lines as within them. My favorite fictional account of the Pacific Theater POW camps has always been King Rat. The Colonel's Way is now my favorite nonfiction.' Jimmy Brown, SSG/Vietnam (ret) 'What a man! A devoted patriot, family man and fearless leader in the worst of imaginable circumstances. We all owe him, and the author, a huge thanks for bringing this whole story to us. Couldn't put it down!' Lt. Totch Hartge, Vietnam, US Army (ret)'The Colonel's Way is one of those rare experiences...nothing is more powerful and heart-stopping than reading words written by someone who has been through the horrors of war while they are actually experiencing it. Colonel Shreve's diaries are told with the frankness and simplicity of a person recording daily events for posterity, with the added poignancy and knowledge the writings may be for those to read when he is no longer there. They show a modest man coping with extraordinary events happening around him in a calm and measured way, supported by the love of a woman he may never see again...the actions of an incredibly brave, selfless individual, without the likes of whom the world would be a lesser place. Quite simply, they are the diaries of a hero. Five Stars! Hollywood ready!' Mike Seares; Screenwriter'The Colonel's Way presents a remarkable portrait of your grandfather. His diaries are a fascinating and moving tribute to the power of the human spirit. He, and the other officers to whom he gives much credit, were the glue that held the men and their mission together. That mission-to survive and to go home.' George F. Obrecht, AttorneySecret Service (ret)
