OverviewBlood transfusion is an essential part of modern health care. Used correctly it can be a life-saving intervention. Inappropriate use can endanger life through potential complications, such as transmission of infectious diseases, such as HIV or hepatitis. The decision to transfuse blood should therefore always be based on a careful assessment of clinical and laboratory indications that transfusion is necessary to save life or prevent significant morbidity. This work is an accessible learning tool to assist prescribers of blood when making clinical decisions on transfusion. Prepared by an international team of clinical and blood transfusion specialists, this book has been extensively reviewed by relevant WHO departments. Part one of the book looks at principles, products and procedures, covering the appropriate uses of intravenous replacement fluids and the procedures and managment of transfusions and reactions. The second part summarizes factors to consider in making clinical decisions on transfusion and alternatives in general medicine, obstetrics, paediatrics and neonatology, surgery and anaesthesia, trauma and acute surgery, and burns. Part three explores how individual clinicians and blood transfusion specialists can make a practical contribution to achieving the appropriate use of blood, both within their own hospitials and more widely.
