Overview

This book is an invaluable review of neurologic critical care in the intensive care unit. The emphasis is on management in day-to-day practice. Part I is devoted to basic management of critically ill patients with acute neurologic diseases. Part II covers the technology and procedures used in the intensive care unit. Part III discusses the management of specific disorders in critical care neurology. Part IV deals with the management of postoperative neurosurgical complications. Part V covers the management of systemic complications. The final section, Part VI, discusses decisions at the end of life and other responsibilities. An appendix is devoted to the calculation of important variables and provides reference tables for daily practice. For quick reference in the intensive care unit the most useful tables and figures have been extracted by the author and reprinted in an accompanying pocket-sized booklet. For this thoroughly revised second edition, there are five new chapters on the organization of the intensive care unit and code of conduct of the neurointensivist, acute spinal disorders, the management of common postoperative neurosurgical complications (two chapters), ethics and legal problems, and withdrawal of life support. Also new to this edition are algorithms on outcome prediction in the specific disorders. This scholarly and yet accessible and practical book spans the entire field of acute neurology but remains cohesive as it is single-authored. Like the first edition, the second will be widely used by neurologists, specialists in neurologic intensive care, neurologists training in neurologic critical care and stroke fellowships, anesthesiologists, neurosurgeons, critical care specialists of all types, emergency physicians, residents in neurology and neurosurgery, and neuroscience nurses.

Reviews

... I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to all practitioners who manage patients with critical neurological illness, whether on a daily or an occasional basis. It contains a remarkable wealth and breadth of information. Brain

This nearly 600-page textbook of critical care neurology is well written and presents Dr. Wijdicks' substantial experience across a large number of neurologic conditions in adults that require intensive care unit (ICU) therapy. It is clear that this textbook was written with great care and precision. -Critical Care Medicine From published reviews of the First Edition [This book] covers the fundamentals of neurocritical care with clarity and authority, and I can give it my highest recommendation: if you buy only one book related to the field of neurologic intensive care, this is the one to get. --Neurology It should be regarded as a comprehensive textbook on the subject and will appeal to physicians at all levels of experience treating acute neurological disorders. The accompanying pocket book...is a valuable addition. -Annals of Neurology ... the book will clearly be of great value not only to critical care neurologists working in neurointensive care units but also to intensivists who may be entirely responsible for the care of neurologically ill and injured patients in general intensive care units. All such workers, nurses, surgeons, and other physicians should have ready access to this book. Thus, let us hope this book, in addition to providing an important new addition to the merging literature of critical care neurology, will spur the further development of this subspecialty... --Charles L. Bolton, M.D., in NEJM ... His writing style is clear and direct and he has done a tremendous service to those of us who take care of patients in the intensive care setting...In my opinion, this outstanding new textbook should be read by everyone who takes care of patients with acute neurologic disease in an intensive care setting. It is appropriate for neurologists, neurosurgeons, critical care specialists, emergency physicians, and critical care nurses. Neurology training programs should make this textbook a mandatory part of the curriculum. --Michael Frankel, M.D., in Neurology ... Wonderfully written and superbly illustrated, this work by a single author is a labor of love which is apparent in every aspect...Dr. Wijdicks has created a practical, informative, and coherent text that should be read not only by neurologists, neurosurgeons, intensivists, and anesthesiologists specializing in neurological critical care, but by anyone caring for critically ill patients. --John Oropello, M.D., in CRIT CARE MED ... Dr. Wijdicks has written an excellent, very readable text that can be enjoyed by physicians at many stages of training. Each chapter contains many helpful tables and charts that summarize the topic at a glance. The publisher has included a pocket-sized manual of most of the tables, an excellent idea that would have been even better if it had been made of durable paper and laminated...I strongly recommend this book to all healthcare providers who work in the NICU setting. --Michael C. Geschwind, M.D., Ph.D., in Neurology This text is unique in its information on the organization of the neurologic critical care unit and its attention to the evolving context of critical care neurology. 5 stars! --Mayo Clin Proc. ...I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to all practitioners who manage patients with critical neurological illness, whether on a daily or an occasional basis. It contains a remarkable wealth and breadth of information. --N.
