Table of ContentsReviewsThe research on this work is of the highest order in both quantity and quality. -John A. Mazis, Hamline University This work has great significance not only for the history of Greece in the first half of the twentieth century but also for the topic of Nazi occupied Europe. In the broader field of modern European history and the Holocaust the work offers a number of fresh insights. The analysis of the effects of the Bulgarian occupation of Macedonia decisively recasts the established view of the Bulgarian government as a committed resister of the Holocaust. In addition, this study adds much needed new ground to the question of the role of the churches in occupied Europe. In analyzing the role of the Greek Church, this work does a masterful job of not treating the church as a monolithic institution. The tensions and divisions between upper and lower clergy in their responses to the stresses of occupation come through clearly. Likewise, the analysis demonstrates a keen awareness of regional variation in the responses of different clerics caused by the tri-partite occupation. --Jonathan Grant, Florida State The research on this work is of the highest order in both quantity and quality. --John A. Mazis Hamline University The Church of Greece Under Axis Occupation offers an excellent context for the attitude of the Orthodox Church of Greece during the Axis occupation and gives important details, although generally apologetic, about the efforts of the Church to keep the nation together and to overcome difficulties. -European Review of History ...this book is a major contribution not only to the church history of modern Greece but also to Greek social, political, and cultural developments in the first half of the twentieth century. It is not only a welcome addition to the growing interest within American academia in modern Greek studies including the Orthodox Church but also a book that should be read by all those interested in World War II, Axis-occupied Europe, the Holocaust, and church-state relations in the modern European context. -- -Vasilios N. Makrides Catholic Historical Review Anastasakis has written a well-researched and knowledgeable book, which undoubtedly makes a significant contribution to scholarship in its area. -- Stuart Parks -Journal of Contemporary European Studies This work has great significance not only for the history of Greece in the first half of the twentieth century but also for the topic of Nazi occupied Europe.
