OverviewThe Christ Cycle in Verse and 3D is a collection of sixty-five poems on the life and ministry of Christ with thirty-two images of sculpture, also by Toddy Hoare, as stations to be pauses for thought. They are there in tandem as hors d'oeuvres to prompt reflection and digestion of the Word made flesh. While this book does not require a theology degree to read it, it should appeal to those with one or those using the Bible for study, prayer, and worship, or as a resource for quiet days. He combines a lifetime of pastoral and theological experience as a priest with artistic and literary talents. Here he meditates in bronze. In this concise and splendidly illustrated text introducing his own work, he shows how the medium of monumental sculpture may frame its own commentary on the profound propositions of sacred Scripture."" --Diarmaid N.J. MacCulloch, Emeritus Professor of the History of the Church, University of Oxford ""Toddy Hoare has an astonishing ability to provide new perspectives on familiar passages from the Bible. Sometimes he does that through sculpture, and sometimes through poetry. In this book he does both. If you want to be inspired afresh by what you thought you knew well, then this is a book to catalyze the process for you."" --Andrew Briggs, Professor of Nanomaterials, University of Oxford ""I searched for the right compliment for Toddy, and I'd say that the knowledge that Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, Eighteenth Baron Dunsany would have disapproved of Toddy is as good as it gets. Although a lifetime of years apart, they both were military men. They were both bigger than life (Dunsany, literally six feet four inches), and both had poverty of spirit--a distinct advantage if one wants to own the kingdom of heaven in the life to come. Why, then, would Dunsany have disapproved of this latter-day representative? The answer is that Dunsany was a poet, too--but, alas, a bloody awful one. Both have experience of the untamed wildness of thought which overflows into unusual turns of phrase--but Toddy can hold a line and make it his in poetry. How cross Lord Dunsany would have been with him!"" --Jonathan Ruffer, Founder, The Auckland Project Author InformationToddy Hoare trained and practiced as a sculptor, served as a soldier with the 15/19 King's Royal Hussars, and spent time with the Missions to Seamen in the Europoort, Holland, before ordination and twenty-five years as a rural parish priest in North Yorkshire (known locally as Herriotshire). He used sculpture to illustrate Scripture and theology. Latterly, on retirement, he reflected on life and where God was to be found with poetry, some based on peace studies in Oxford. He is now in North Yorkshire, retired from parish life. Tab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
