OverviewThis is a story of change... ...a story about winning hearts and minds, a tale of two men, both trained to kill; one is a professional combat soldier heading the highly decorated and prestigious Rashtriya Rifles, a counter terrorist outfit of the Indian Army raised to eliminate terrorism from the hill state of Jammu & Kashmir. The other, a dreaded terrorist infamous for making and planting hundreds of improvised explosive devices that have killed many security personnel in Kashmir, leaving scores maimed for life. Randeep Singh Kshatriya or Randy, Commanding Officer of the 70th Battalion, Rashtriya Rifles posted in the south of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian's northern most state Jammu and Kashmir, has no doubt about why he has been sent to the killing grounds of the north - his task is clear - eliminate terrorists, protect his troops from suicide attacks and if civilian casualties are unavoidable, don't avoid them. For him, collateral damage is acceptable if the larger goal of bringing peace and stability to the valley has to be achieved. Mohammed Afsal Bhat on the other hand is the dreaded terrorist trained in making the deadliest of bombs, a terrorist fighting to free his land from the army's control. He will do whatever it takes to see 'his Kashmir' become free from despotic Indian rule. He lives in the jungles, fights like a guerilla and has one aim - merciless elimination of men in uniform. His passion is fatal. Both men are successful in creating terror in their area. Killing comes easy to them. The lives of civilians mean little to these two professionals. They have a mission and nothing will stop them from achieving it, at least that's what they think. Destiny however has different plans and the two men are forced by circumstances to work together on a mission. A mission that will surely end up with one amongst the two losing his life. The story revolves around these two powerful men and their lives, the choices they make and the impact of their decisions on the lives of those near to them. Whilst Randy is struggling to prove his military capabilities to the world, mostly to his own self, Afsal will not let anything or anyone come in between him and his freedom struggle. Be it is his ailing parents or Saiba, the only woman he has ever loved and has a love child from. A powerful tale that will take the reader behind the scenes of what happens in a counter terrorist operation. The reader will enjoy an adrenaline rush when on-the-spot decisions are taken that can impact the lives of many. The reader will be torn while choosing between one man's fight for freedom and another man's struggle to eliminate terrorists from the state. The story is gripping and the readers feel they are part of the larger game - of death and glory, of encountering terrorism from the closest quarters, of seeing the Kashmir problem from two prisms, one through the lens of an army officer and the other from the eyes of a dreaded terrorist. The reader will connect to both men and choosing one from the other will be difficult. But most importantly the story dwells on the fine balance between humanity and malevolence. The reader will witness how destiny plays its fine tune and the two intolerant and strong minded men dance to it. How humanising suffering can change perceptions and save the lives of thousands of innocents. Even death has dignity and destiny makes sure that the two men show it respect.
