He is a chemist by training and has degrees from the University of St Andrews and the University of Edinburgh. He has authored over 80 scientific papers and authored/edited five books. He was a Visiting Professor at the University of Ulster (2013-2017). He is also President of the International Life Sciences Institute, Europe and was formerly President of the Industry and Technology Division Council of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) and Chairman of the Food Group of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
