As a result of Fresh Expressions and other mission initiatives, the term 'church' now covers an incredible variety of formal and informal congregations and networks - a dramatic shift from earlier understandings. Such change ushers in numerous practical and theological questions - when does an occasional gathering of a group of people in a cafe, pub, club, sports centre, or via the internet actually become a church? What characterizes a missional church? Is it different in essence and from a traditional church? Author Information

JOHN DRANE is a pre-eminent voice in the missional church. A minister of the Church of Scotland, he has taught at the Universities of Stirling and Aberdeen and at Fuller Theological Seminary in the US. He is Chair of the Mission Theology Advisory Group which works with Fresh Expressions. A Chaplain to the Queen, he recently facilitated a meeting between Prince Charles, Bill Gates, Richard Branson and Rupert Murdoch on the morality of global business.
