"Navid Ziran, Board certified orthopedic trauma surgeon ""As a practicing orthopedic trauma surgeon, I wanted to communicate my thoughts to the public after I read this book. It describes one man's journey of finding joy and success amidst a life riddled with obstacles and despair due to insulin-dependent diabetes. I perform many amputations (toe, trans metatarsal, below the knee, and above the knee) due to diabetic foot infections, and am very familiar with the effects of diabetes on the mental/physical quality of life and overall longevity. For instance, the overall 5-year mortality rate after an amputation is 62%. The author of this book, who has suffered from insulin-dependent diabetes since age 8, has defied the odds for survival. How he has survived this long, from an MD's point of view, I'm not sure - as this is one of the unexplained magical parts of his life. And yet, he is still here to tell his story. Whereas other individuals would have died a long time ago, the author not only survived but developed into a world-renown designer - and he sought joy and established solid friendships along the way. In an era where some of the current younger generation wants to blame the world for their dysfunction, the author clearly manifests the opposite mantra - that is, he never let his problems define his existence and instead, built his own legacy. He is a quintessential example of how the human spirit can not only adapt/overcome but also flourish and succeed despite overwhelming odds. Truly, his life story embraces ""ad astra per aspera"" - a crooked path leads to the stars. The last comment I wanted to make about this book is regarding the relationships he forged with others throughout his life - including those with his family, business contacts, friends, and partner Steven. After reading John's memoir, I concluded that despite all the chaos of our current era, true kindness and integrity are ever present all around us - and they are worth fighting for. The author reminded me that real goodness inside of us attracts angels that help us along this wild ride - and it was definitely a wild ride for John! In fact, perhaps that is why he is still here - because something inside of him attracted angels that, in an almost orchestrated fashion, helped him every step of the way. Regarding survivability and inner strength, the author represents the end of the bell curve for not only diabetic patients but also humans. I highly recommend this book not only to diabetics, but also to anyone who seeks to understand how strong the human spirit can be."" Cynthia Rowley, global fashion and home accessories designer. ""I laughed out loud at every story. John's triumph over medical adversity is enormously uplifting. He chooses joy, happiness and unwavering positivity in his quest to live life on his own terms. I have never met a person with more energy and pathological optimism."""

Author Information

"John Robert Wiltgen started writing as soon as his mother bought him a used Underwood typewriter at a garage sale. During middle school he was editor of the school newspaper. He graduated high school in 3 years studying art, literature, creative writing and theater. When he was 17, he was the manager of the Midwest region's model store for the Glidden Paint company while he studied interior design in the evenings despite his mother's pleas he should be an accountant. ""You can always get a job as an accountant,"" she argued. To no one's surprise he didn't take her advice. He's a Leo. Instead, he quit his lucrative job at the paint store to attend design school full-time. After a brief stint at Ray Vogue School of Design, the headmaster asked him to clean out his locker, stop paying his monthly tuition installments and never return. He was still 18 years old when he embarked on his career as a residential designer and never looked back. It's nearly impossible to build a luxury design firm when he lost his sight a short time later. After all, who wants to hire a blind decorator? At 22 John was diagnosed with retinopathy-a complication of diabetes. And though diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in working-aged people it did not stop John from eventually building his award-winning design firm into a multi-million dollar business. Despite a four-year period of blindness, followed by many other complications of type 1 diabetes, John built his residential design firm by also writing press releases, articles, and lectures. His home designs have been created for clients across North America and as far away as Africa's Ivory Coast. He obsessed over making his clients' worlds beautiful. John Robert Wiltgen's firm's name is synonymous with its reputation for excellence and superior quality in design, styling, and craftsmanship. The Candy in My Pocket is John's first book."
