The Bus Monitor

Overview

After-school student Samuel, like many other youths, loves to feel like part of something. Mr. Jackson, the after-school bus driver, is more than just a driver: he has an incredible rapport with his students, going above and beyond to give each of them a sense of belonging and responsibility. When Samuel agrees to take on the role of bus monitor, his main duty is to walk the bus daily, ensuring that every student exits on time and waking up any classmates who may have fallen asleep. But one day, Samuel falls asleep himself and fails to perform his duty. Rather than reprimand him, Mr. Jackson demonstrates the best qualities of an adult by gently reminding Samuel that no one is perfect. He assures Samuel with kindness and empathy that it s okay to make mistakes, and that failure is part of learning and growing. The Bus Monitor is a heart-warming and uplifting tale that highlights the importance of kindness, understanding, and empathy especially in moments when they are most needed. This story encourages building others up instead of tearing them down, making it an inspiring read for all ages.

Author Information

Kenneth Johnson is an author, counselor, educator, co-owner of a child care center/afterschool program and real estate agent. He is a Mississippian with degrees from the University of Mississippi and a graduate degree from Mississippi State University. Kenneth was employed in community mental health centers for several years, as well as an inpatient facility. He and his wife Georgia of 36 years leaped out on faith in 2009 and started an after-school center which evolved into a full service child care center that continues to be in operation. Kenneth has always had an interest in writing, and his experiences and exposure to children books at the daycare center encouraged him to pursue writing books. His first children s manuscript, Beyond Caring, was published in March of 2024. His future plans are to use his experiences as a child care provider to use an element of humor as well as convey a positive message to our youth readers.
