OverviewOn a hot afternoon in the swamps of the southern United States, a group of beetles are interacting sexually on the shore of a lake. Females are larger than males, and males prefer larger ones to mate with. When this occurs, males bring food as a bridal gift. However, not all females are the same size and therefore the smallest are at risk of running out of a male to provide them with food and the opportunity to pass on their genes to other generations. To overcome this disadvantage, small females mount on top of each other to give the appearance of a very large single female. Males, who are nearsighted, don't realize this trick and invariably end up sharing their food and mating with these little females who have tricked them. Thousands of kilometers to the east, in the South African jungle, a pair of non-human primates known as wild gelatos is copulating behind a tree. However, unlike the other members of their group who emit screams and moans when they do, this couple not only hides from each other, but also remains silent. The reason: they want to enjoy their sexual encounter without being discovered by the male of the unfaithful female who is oblivious to what is happening. A little further north, in the central part of Africa, a female belonging to a group of primates closely related to humans and known by the name of bonobos stares at a male who has a piece of food that she wants. The interesting thing is that this female does not try to attack the male to take away his food; quite the contrary, it reclines on its back and exposes its genitals. The male understands the message and begins to copulate with it. After finishing, he leaves, but not before giving her the piece of food she wanted. Hundreds of kilometers to the north, in the Prado museum in Madrid, an enthusiastic group of people observes the central panel of a painting by Hieronimus Bosch, El Bosco, known as The Garden of Delights, in which lust is represented as a large group of men and women who interact in much the same way as previously described in beetles and non-human primates, despite having appeared on earth millions of years before humans.
