Newitt is best known as a historian of the Portuguese colonial empire, especially in Africa. A specialist in Portuguese colonial history, Malyn Newitt is the author of numerous books on the subject, including Portuguese Settlement on the Zambesi (1973), Portugal in Africa (1981), A History of Mozambique (1995), East Africa (2002) and A History of Portuguese Overseas Expansion (2004).
