John's lucid description of being lit up by searchlights, with shrapnel striking his burning bomber, makes for riveting reading. John recalls being ready to bale out, convinced his end was coming, found relief clutching his St Christopher and silently praying as his Lancaster was peppered by flak. He made it home, but many did not, and a solemn chapter describes how he dealt with the grief of comrades lost. Twitter review by Elizabeth Austin - tweeted Thank you for this superb book! It's the best book I've read in a long time. 28 Amazon 5 star reviews "Britain At War magazine - August 2020 issue 160 - review by John Ash ""This candid account is a joy to read. The Boy With Only One Shoe is his illustrated social history autobiography, from his childhood growing up in Warrington in the 1920s through to enlisting at 18 and joining Bomber Command. John describes beautifully what it was like living through those wartime years and waking up on an operational base in 1945. You feel like you are there with him. The empty chairs and empty tables of colleagues who failed to return. His crew had several close calls but were one of the lucky ones to survive. As few now remain to recount this experience first hand he felt that this book needed to be written in remembrance and honour of those who didn't return. More importantly though - it now needs to be read - lest we forget. Caroline is John's daughter. She initially trained as a school teacher, obtaining a Bachelor of Education Degree (B.Ed) and working for two years as a primary school teacher. She then switched careers to become an airline pilot and obtained an Airline Pilot Transport Licence (ATPL). She flew commercially for 20 years, finishing as an Airline Captain for British Regional Airlines at Cardiff Airport. Caroline says she only became an Airline Pilot because her father John forgot to pick her up from college one day - but that's a whole other story! Caroline now works full time along with her daughter Stephanie running their own Livery Stables from their small holding in South Wales. Tab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
