OverviewGeorge Weah is the current sitting president of Liberia, Africa's first modern democracy and the world's second constitutional democracy. Weah is also a former professional soccer player who played as a striker for several top European clubs. George Oppong Manneh Weah was born and raised in Monrovia, Liberia. Before being discovered by French coach Arsene Wenger, Weah played for several local Liberian teams including the Liberian national team. With the help of his French coach, in 1988 Weah delved into the French football arenas securing himself a permanent spot at A.S Monaco Club. In 1992, George Oppong Weah was transferred to Paris-Saint German and became the team's top goals scorer in the 1994-95 UEFA Champions League. After making his name as a domestic household name in France, Weah headed for the rough and tumble leagues in 1995 by joining the Italian team A.C. Milan. For the next four seasons, George Weah played extraordinarily well ensuring his team two championship titles. In 1995, while playing in the Italian club he was awarded the FIFA World, Europe, and Africa soccer Player of the year awards all within the same year, he was also awarded the Ballon d'Or and Onze d'Or. In the process of winning those accolades, his country was engulfed in a brutal civil war and pollical carnage. To this date, George Oppong Manneh Weah is the only existing African soccer player to acquire all three awards in one year while carrying the weight of his country on his shoulders. After leaving the Italian soccer stage, he joined the tough English league by signing on with the Chelsea Football Club. In the Wake Of his retirement from professional soccer, George Manneh Weah entered politics and ended up losing two elections before coming back to win his third attempt in the General Elections in 2017 and was subsequently named the 25th President of Liberia for his party Congress for Democratic Change.
