If by my labors the sum Of human suffering is made less, and the great family Of mankind are taught essons of improvement in their condition, it matters not by whom it is brought about. It will probably be thought by many to be a great piece Of presumption in one who has not been regularly educated for the profession, to undertake to write a medical work; but as to this I have no answer to make. And shall leave the people to form their own conclusions, after investigating the subject and giving us a fair and impartial trial. If the merits of a medical work depended upon its being written mostly in a foreign language, unintelligible to the great mass Of the people, I must confess myself incompetent to such a task; but shall take the liberty to deny the utility or necessity Of such a means to impart useful knowledge.
