The Book of Us

Overview

The world has gone to shit, is it any use dreaming of better times? The host believes so. Emotional, eventful, quietly thoughtful and comical, this unusual apocalyptic drama takes the reader to a place where there is a very real struggle, against the results of dictatorship and corrupt governments. While the host rebels against the Higher Ones the one thing that spurs her on is her reward, the realisation of a utopian land, Elysian Fields. The gift is promised to her, should she help bring down the H.O.. Her story is one of several written into The Book of Us while gamer Solomon, young Poppy, the aging Bertie and the fearful Theo have their own stories of struggle. Solomon takes cover in a nuclear bunker uncertain of his future in the bleak world outside. Poppy, who claims to hates kids, finds herself going to the aid of a little girl, much to her annoyance. Bertie arrives in a town with one occupant, an old St. Bernard, beginning a new life for them both. Theo, whose father was murdered, is afraid of everything and has to face a new world with only his mother by his side. In many stories of hope there is usually a darkness. In this case the darkness is the tattooed man and, after an encounter with him, one has to wonder who will stay alive long enough to reach Elysium Fields and tell their story.
