Solomon takes cover in a nuclear bunker uncertain of his future in the bleak world outside. Poppy, who claims to hates kids, finds herself going to the aid of a little girl, much to her annoyance. Bertie arrives in a town with one occupant, an old St. Bernard, beginning a new life for them both. Theo, whose father was murdered, is afraid of everything and has to face a new world with only his mother by his side. In many stories of hope there is usually a darkness. In this case the darkness is the tattooed man and, after an encounter with him, one has to wonder who will stay alive long enough to reach Elysium Fields and tell their story.
