Hutchinson came to China in 2003 to work full-time as a teacher and self-supporting missionary. He is actively involved as a speaker on environmental issues in China. He spends his spare time playing basketball with students and hiking in the Qinling Mountains near Xian, where the endangered golden snub-nosed monkey and rare brown giant panda reside.
