"The tone of Ecclesiastes is often negative, sometimes what we might call ""way negative."" The writer speaks of the emptiness and vanity of life. He had the wealth and ability to attempt to fill his life with the best the world had to offer, only to find that all those things still left him wanting. It seemed that nothing could satisfy him. This emptiness serves as an instrument of God's mercy and grace to call our attention to better and eternal things, to see that only God can fill our emptiness and meet our needs through Christ.
