Excerpt from The Book of Church Law As for the endowments by which the clergy of the Church are maintained, and its divine service provided for, they have not been bestowed by the State out of the public exchequer, but have mostly been derived from money or land offered for the purpose by sovereigns, noble men, and other persons, in their private capacity, and out of their private possessions.1 A very large amount of the property thus given was alienated from religious to secular uses in the time of the Tudors, and this alienation was confirmed by Act of Parliament; but no corresponding endowment of the clergy by Act of Parliament is to be found.
